PTE and IELTS – Modules

PTE and IELTS are conducted under two common versions of Academic and General Categories. However, PTE has an additional module known as Young Learners Test. The Young Learner’s test checks the ability of minors for the English language. Besides the versions, the test format and structure differs with various components of the tests.

Pearson’s automated scoring tool assess the essay written by the candidate. IELTS is completely paper-based and the examiners evaluate the papers manually. The criteria are common for writing part of both the tests including vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and content consistency. While IELTS uses graph or chart and diagram; the PTE test uses innovative computerised techniques.

PTE tests allow the candidate to give speaking exam using a microphone. The responses of the candidates are captured in the form audio files and analysed digitally by the PTE scoring system. Whereas IELTS examines the speaking skills of the student by live face to face conversation with the examiner.

PTE Academic uses some intangible skills of the students using some integrated questions. IELTS does not use integrated questions. But the reading part is quite common between the two tests as both ascertain skill of reading between the lines.

If you are appearing for the IELTS test, you will mostly listen to the British accent. But PTE uses different types of accents to check the listening capabilities of the candidate.

Test Pattern and Scoring Patterns

The structure greatly differs in the terms of timings for each part of the PTE and IELTS. IELTS allows candidates to move forwards and backwards but PTE sections are programmed for specific time and allow only to move forward. PTE completely uses an automated method of scoring and offers analytical objective results. The human assessment is used in the evaluation of IELTS test. The PTE rates the candidates in the band of 10 to 90, while IELTS manual scoring pattern rates the skills in the band of 0 to 9.

Some candidates feel convenient with the human evaluators in IELTS, while the automated ways are also preferred by some.
